(Case Study) Real-time Wearable Heat Strain Monitoring Device
Exposure to excessive heat during physical labor creates occupational safety risks, giving rise to deficits in physical and cognitive functions, and reduced work capacity, especially for those who are also required to wear personal protective equipment. The U.S. Department of Labor has recently launched an occupational heat exposure initiative to protect both outdoor and indoor workers. Chevron is evaluating a novel wearable sweat patch that measures an individual’s sweat loss, electrolyte loss and skin temperature to continuously track personalized hydration and help reduce the risk of heat stress. The sweat patch and software system also notifies the worker in real-time of the amount of fluid and electrolyte replacement needed based on sweat loss. Currently, breaks occur by using work/rest schedules based on temperature, workload or when workers or supervisors feel they need a water break. By monitoring each individual, the sweat patch will be able to provide actionable recommendations to the worker on how to adequately rehydrate themselves with both water and electrolytes, thereby reducing the risk of heat illnesses and safety incidents on the job.

Learning objectives:
-Learn about research Chevron is conducting to reduce the risk of heat illness for field workers and present the results of a Proof of Concept Field Trial.
-Be introduced to a new wearable technology that is being designed to notify the worker when it is appropriate for individuals to break to rehydrate.
-Learn strategies regarding reducing the risk of heat illness outside of the typical heat index charts.

Educational Gaps Session Will Address:
-OSHA standards for working in the heat
-Heat Illness Signs and Symptoms
-Proper hydration

(Case Study) Scalability Requirements for an Enterprise - Thought Experiment
Scaling visualization solutions in the enterprise today faces many different hurdles than past software deployment experiences. In this case study we enter a quick thought experiment to explore the challenges and solutions in pivoting existing infrastructure, adding new architectural and process components, and rolling out bleeding-edge hardware and technology. Visualization products are quickly turning from a novelty to a commodity that requires more than our existing DevOps and IT pipelines to survive. Deployment teams need to consider scalability factors that involve the larger organization to achieve not only the basic application deployment requirements, but also necessary integrations such as Digital Thread Pipelines, Cloud Edge, 5G, or Remote Rendering to be successful in all environments.

Seven years ago I was invited to be "a voice of reason" at this summit's first convening. An expert in XR and user experience, I stepped through the changes that I expected we'd need for wearables to take hold. In many ways, I was right. In more important ones, however, I was wrong.

(Case Study) EQ FOR XR: HELPING CREATIVE & MERCHANDISING TEAMS ADOPT 3D
Introducing a new technology into an organization is always a challenge- funding it, building it and operationalizing it, even more so. This is especially true when the perception is that it could make existing skillsets obsolete.

The creation of 3D content involves new work streams and new stakeholders, but the aesthetic sensibilities and consumer insights needed to engage customers remain unchanged. The impact of curation and storytelling will never fall away. We need the talent we have today- most of whom have never leveraged 3D assets in their work.

Emotional intelligence has a place on your technology roadmap. It’s a big LOE, of course, but baking it in means you’ll spend a lot less time dragging colleagues into the future kicking and screaming. (Not literally, of course.)

The process is rooted in this basic truth; We need one another.

(Case Study) XR for Training! Hmm, ok.
My presentation will address the expectation that one can just apply XR experiences to training and development as easily as we would use any other development tool. It is cool and engaging but how do we use it to actually "train" someone to know or do something, rather than just "show" them something in a more immersive environment. These goals are completely different.

I'd like to walk participants through some of the considerations for training and development and the complexities of duplicating those considerations, using standard ADDIE, to XR solutions.

We'll discuss what XR offers to training and development and some of the best ways to take advantage of the platform, the experience, while still maintaining the focus on the development/advancement of knowledge and performance.

(Opening Keynote) Power of Augmented Work Instructions in Manufacturing
The nature of manufacturing work has changed. An exodus of retiring experts, high turnover and increasing complexity has put pressure on industrial organizations across the globe.

The need for the workforce to grow with technology while also maintaining, or transitioning, their hard-earned skills to new team members, makes better knowledge transfer, work instructions and training methods imperative for operational excellence.

AR technology can equip employees with the skills to safely, efficiently, and accurately complete complex tasks, thereby reducing operating costs, improving production performance, and providing a competitive edge.
Join this session to learn how augmented reality can help close the skills gap and create a powerful force for productivity improvement, workforce agility and operational efficiency by:

  • Accelerating learning and shrinking training costs
  • Improving accuracy and reducing production downtime
  • Decreasing the costs of human error, scrap, and waste
  • Improved quality and continuous improvement

Topics for this presentation will include some reflection on the initial perception of wearables usage in a manufacturing environment, particularly from an Information Technology standpoint. The impact of a myriad of changes to our present operating environment including personnel, supply chain and overall business climate have yielded use cases not considered in our original Proof of Concepts.

Examples of usage outside of I.T. and typical ‘over the shoulder’ support will be highlighted along with a few suggestions for engaging internal departments, outside vendors and perhaps employment candidates to address some of the effects of a post-pandemic workplace.
